Standards in EMR Systems

Electronic medical record systems have to follow certain standards to ensure that they adhere to the standards, as information stored on electronic medical record systems is very vital for the organization. Let us delve further into the types of standards in electronic medical record systems.

ASTM Continuity of Care Record – This is a patient health related record based on the XML standard, and all the information regarding the record can be created, accessed and stored allowing easy interoperability between different entities.

ANSI X12 - These are a set of transactions protocols, which are, sue for transmitting various patient data. The set of protocols have become very famous in the United States.

CEN – This standard is better known as EN13606 and is a European standard for the transmission of information from HER systems and HISA.

DICOM – This is a widely and a heavily use standard for representing and transmitting radio images of patients and other data. It is also used for reporting purposes.

HL7 – These types of messages are used for interchange between the hospital and the doctor’s record systems and between EMR systems and practice management systems. The documents are used to communicate important physician notes and other materials.

ISO – ISO TC215 has redefined the HER and produced technical specification by the name of ISO 18308 for describing the requirements for HER architectures.

Open HER – This is a set of new generation specifications and implementations for HER systems and communication. It is based on a new software system and clinical models.

The standards described above are the main standards for electronic medical record. As time passes and the systems improve and change, increasingly newer standards will be implemented. After all the standards have to change if the systems change.
